WHAT ARE THE RECOMMENDED PORTIONS?

On the label of each DOG PERFORMANCE® package you find portions and user instructions in relation to the dog’s weight and age. Of course they are “standard” indications, which fit to the average dog, but they cannot take into consideration specific factors such as climate (life in cold weather increases the need of calories, and vice versa), the health conditions or the type of activity carried out by each subject. It is a good practice to keep the dog’s weight monitored (once a week for puppies, once a month for young dogs, and twice a year for adults) and have it checked by the vet in order to know whether the dog is growing well or is keeping the right physical fitness. The dog will NEVER be fat (with the exception of breeds requiring a layer of under skin fat, such as the water utility dogs), but it should not also go down under a certain weight: unfortunately, especially in breeds with long hair coats, it not always easy to realize variations by simply looking at the dog. Therefore, a periodical weighing is highly recommended. The same food will never give the same results on all dogs, because (like human beings) metabolism is an important factor for them too: there are subjects, which “burn” calories more than others, even within the same breed and age.
The indications provided by the pet food producer are indeed “indications”, which will always have to be integrated with a periodical weight check and the vet’s advices (and, for puppies, by the breeder too).
Like all “high quality” pet foods, which contain a highly protein component, DOG PERFORMANCE® never requires to be used in big quantities: a medium size dog, for instance, should eat around 300 grams of products. The provision of a high quality product, not loading the stomach with excessive quantities, also helps to prevent problems related to stomach dilatation-torsion, serious and often lethal pathology of which we are not still sure about the causes, but which seems to be favoured by food “gobbling” and above all of water. For this reason we advise to leave the dog with fresh water as often as possible, so that it can take some at any time (dray food slightly increases thirst) and it is not forced to fill up its stomach as it happens to subjects which have seldom access to water during the day. Other preventive measures against stomach dilatation-torsion are splitting the meal in two portions and keeping the dog quiet for at least two hours after each meal, without allowing it to run and/or have sport training.
